What is a Safer Routes Scheme?

A Safer Route Scheme (SRS) is a range of safety improvements near a school/educational establishment to make the highway safer, more accessible and encourage sustainable travel such as walking, cycling and scooting. The schemes also look to reduce traffic, congestion and improve air quality in and around the community.

Funded through the Local Transport Plan, we have a long established Safer Routes programme that will complement the healthy lifestyle initiatives chosen by A*STARS schools/establishments. All requested schemes are reviewed annually in December for inclusion in the following year's programme. We will notify schools/educational establishments of the progress of their request following Cabinet approval of the annual programme; normally in April
