What is Child Pedestrian Training?

We work in every A*STARS primary school to deliver pedestrian training for parents and carers of reception pupils, and supervised training walks for Year 3 pupils.

Parent/Carer and Child Reception Walks

At reception age, we invite parents/carers to join their children on a walk around the school vacinity. As each child has their own adult with them, it is the perfect opportunity for parents/carers to be encouraged to use safe road practices particularly when out with their children to understand how much or how little they know.

The talk is addressed to the adults, so only pupils of attending parents or carers take part.

Topics covered include:

  • child development- Knowing to walk with a grown up and hold hands near a road. Also understanding the difference between the footpath and the road.
  • crossing skills- introducing Stop, Look, Listen and Think
  • driveways/car parks- dangers that children need to be aware whilst walking along the footpath, explaining what to look and listen for
  • footpath- talking about positioning on the footpath when passing parked vehicles, explaining what to look and listen for

This walk is available to each new intake into the school, making sure that all children are included.

TOGO NOGO Year 3 Training

Road safety walks are also available for Year 3 pupils. This walk raises a child's awareness of their environment, as at this age some may already be crossing the road on their own. If not crossing at this age, many children are starting to venturing out independantly.

To help raise awareness of  positive road safety messages we use Step Outside with TOGO NOGO, a child pedestrian educational and practical training programme.  Six interactive classroom sessions are used to develop valuable road safety skills followed by a roadside practical session to re-enforce the messages.

Topics covered include:

  • Lesson 1- Ready to Go out, what you should know
  • Lesson 2-Traffic & Roads
  • Lesson 3-Where to walk and safer crossing places
  • Lesson 4-Danger & Obstacles
  • Lesson 5-Crossing the Road
  • Lesson 6- Extended Year 3 Activity- Safer Crossing with Togo Nogo
  • Lesson 7- Practical roadside session
