What is Bikeability?
How does it work?
Bikeability is ‘cycling proficiency’ for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.
Bikeability helps children to develop road sense, the ability to navigate and improve their independence - all of which will boost their confidence. Furthermore the different levels teach:
- Level 1 teaches basic skills and bicycle handling and is usually covered in a traffic free environment. Those completing Level 1 will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make a trip and undertake activities safely in a traffic free environment and as a pre-requisite to a road trip.
- Level 2 gives children the skills they need to cycle safely to school on minor roads. Level 2 is covered on quiet roads but with real traffic conditions. Those completing Level 2 will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make short trips on quiet roads.
What are the benefits?
- More children cycling will lead to improved health and fitness as it is one of the best forms of exercise you can get
- Cycling is excellent for the planet as it helps to reduce congestion and pollution
- Kids who cycle are often more independent, confident and perform better at school
- Cycling is so much faster than walking
- It’s fun and it’s free to cycle
